Members of our team met with NJEA consultants to prepare and organize the collection of data from all members. A survey was crafted and a date was set to meet with all association members for the purpose of gathering the collective voices and input from all association stakeholders.
9/5 – At the General Membership meeting, surveys were distributed and data was collected from over 700 association members.
9/17 – Our Team, several NJEA Consultants and many SBEA volunteer members met on Sunday, September 17th, from 9:30a – 3:30p at the NJEA Office in Trenton, to review all of the input gathered from our membership survey taken back on the first day of school. The team spent the day reading, reflecting and compiling all of the data. Each and every survey was read by the team. The team learned a great deal of information regarding the concerns and perspectives as a whole, but particularly gained a deeper understanding of the perspectives from within smaller groups of our membership. Some of the big themes were working conditions, health insurance, salary & stipends, class size, paperwork, and much more. Some of the issues raised are not negotiable, but gives us great feedback to share with administration to fight on behalf of the association to improve our working conditions. View video.
10/6 & 10/7 – The Team met on over the weekend of 10/6 and 10/7 at the Forrestal Center in Princeton to analyze all of the stakeholder survey data that was organized on Sunday, September 17th. Under the guidance of a research team from NJEA, the team spent 5 hours on Friday evening and over 10 hours on Saturday crafting a proposal that reflects the many needs of our members. View video.
10/15 – The Team worked for several more hours to craft a proposal.
11/15 & 11/30 – The Team worked to finalize the proposal.
Although our team’s proposal was complete, and were ready to exchange proposals with the Board, the Board was still not ready to negotiate, as they still needed more time to complete their proposal. The Team organized dates to meet with the Board’s Negotiations Team to exchange proposals.
Our Team met with the Board of Education’s Team on January 17th for the first time. The ground rules for the process moving forward were agreed upon. During the meeting, the Team shared with the Board the process behind how we crafted our proposal. We shared with them how we gathered information from our membership as a whole at the stakeholder interviews that took place back on the first day of September. They became fully aware that our proposal is ready to go, and it is a reflection of the needs, concerns and perspectives of all of our members.
Our SBEA Negotiations Team met with the Board of Education’s Team on February 22nd to exchange proposals beginning at 6pm and ending just after 9:00pm. The meeting was cordial. During the meeting, SBEA made a 45-minute presentation of our proposal to the Board that is inclusive of the feedback gathered from our membership during the stakeholder interviews that took place back on the first day of the school year. Time was taken to justify our proposal positions and to educate the Board on the needs and concerns of our membership.
Our SBEA Negotiations Team met with the Board of Education’s Team on March 13th to exchange counter proposals beginning at 4pm and ending just before 10:00pm. During the meeting, several items were tentatively agreed upon. Time was taken to justify our proposal positions once again.

Following a 13-hour mediation session with the state mediator, our SBEA Negotiations Team reached a tentative agreement with the South Brunswick Board of Education. Details of this settlement will be finalized with our NJEA Representatives in the weeks leading up to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. A General Membership Informational Meeting will be scheduled for September. The team will continue to update all members with more information regarding this meeting as details become available. The mediator has imposed a details blackout, so we are unable to answer questions about the settlement at this time.
